Annual Sewer Main Line Flushing

TOWN OF KENSINGTON ANNUAL SEWER MAIN LINE FLUSHING PROGRAM.

The Town of Kensington wishes to inform residents and businesses that regular scheduled sanitary sewer main maintenance will be taking place in various areas of the Town to remove settled and accumulating material. This maintenance will commence today Wednesday, November 19, 2014 for approximately 3 days.

The areas affected by the maintenance program are as follows:

  • Brookins Drive
  • Victoria Street East (Portion)
  • Elizabeth Drive
  • Davison Street
  • Russell Street
  • Chestnut Street
  • Woodleigh Drive
  • Pleasant Street
  • School Street
  • Commercial Street
  • Lowther Street

Please be advised that during this process the contractor will be setting up their apparatus at each manhole in the roadway and releasing pressurized water through the sanitary sewer main pipe to remove any buildup.

A bubbling and/or vacuum effect may be noticed in your drains and toilets due to this maintenance flushing. It is recommended to keep all toilet seats closed and cover any floor drains. Internal plumbing consists of traps which hold a volume of water to prevent sewer gasses from migrating into a home. During the flushing process, this water could be drawn out of the traps by negative pressure created in the sanitary sewer main. For that reason, it is important to refill all plumbing traps by running the water in your sinks and floor drains after the work is complete.

Please be patient during this preventative maintenance process and understand that it is necessary to eliminate the potential for sanitary sewer main surcharging which could result in damage to property.

Residents are reminded that they are required to have a backwater valve on their sewer lateral. Backwater valves are required to keep sewer from backing up into your house through your plumbing fixtures, due to blockages in the main sewer lines. It also provides protection from sewer flushing as part of the Town’s maintenance program.
