Kensington Relay For Life – Update

Due to declining participation at the Kensington Relay in recent years in spite of the efforts of staff, dedicated volunteers and the support of the community. Given all this, we have recommended not having a standalone Relay in Kensington this year and are hoping everyone will join either the Summerside or Charlottetown Relays. For info on registering for these events, please visit www.relayforlife.ca or contact Gail at gail.macdonald@pei.cancer.ca.
There Kensington Relay for Life Committee has become the “Kensington Independent Fundraising Committee” and has joined forces with two already existing events that in the past were to support the Kensington Relay: The Black Dress Soiree and The Hoedown for Hope.

Black Dress Soiree – a night to celebrate women! Leave the men and kids at home for a spectacular ladies night out. The Black Dress Soiree is back for its 6th year and it’s going to bigger and better than ever. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at http://bit.ly/blackdresssoiree, at Mel’s Petro in Kensington, Silhouette 11 in Summerside, or the Canadian Cancer Society office. There are a limited number, so get them before they are gone! Proceeds will go to support women’s cancers on PEI.

What is Relay For Life?

Relay For Life is the Canadian Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. It occurs in communities across the Island and is much more than just an event. It is truly a unique experience that offers everyone in the community an opportunity to join together to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer. Teams are usually made up of 10 – 15 participants who register for either the 6 or 12 hour non-competitive event. During this event participants camp out and take turns walking, jogging or strolling around a track. Each participant is asked to raise at least $100. and each team must have at least one representative on the track at all times during the event.

How you can get involved

Become a team captain: Take on the responsibility of being the leader and motivator for your team. Recruit a Co-Captain so you can support each other. Be the communication link between your team and the Cancer Society. Support, motivate and excite your team and help them meet your fundraising goals.

Become a Corporate Sponsor: Sponsorship from local businesses helps to off-set the cost of staging Relay events. This ensures that funds raised are used to minimize the incidence and impact of cancer in the community. Businesses can donate in cash or in-kind. Please contact us to find out how you can help.

Join the Organizing Committee: Staging an event like Relay For Life requires a dedicated and energetic committee of volunteers. Volunteers with creative ideas, generosity of spirit and time to share are always appreciated.

Share your talents: Trackside entertainment is a huge part of the vibrant and festive atmosphere at Relay For Life. If you’ve got talent and are willing to share it, we want to hear from you!

Support a Relay For Life team: Apart from donating to team fundraising, there are many ways you can support team members. During the Relay, join the hundreds of other supporters trackside and cheer on team members, or offer to help as an event day volunteer.

Share your survivorship: Cancer survivors and their caregivers are Relay’s guests of honor. If you have experienced a cancer diagnosis, we would like to invite you to join us as our special guest at our Survivor Reception and our first lap of this year’s Relay, your Victory Lap.

Join in the Luminary Ceremony: This is the defining element of Relay – a time to remember those we’ve lost and to show our support for those living with cancer. Decorate a candle bag in someone’s honour or memory, and place it on the track with hundreds of others’ tributes.
