Ernie Deighan (right) and Freddy MacKinnon (left) were classed as firemen on August 4, 1918 and November 1, 1941 respectively. They both became classed as engineers later in their careers. The engineer and fireman had to work closely as a team to ensure the train got through on time. The fireman stoked the coals until the steam was at the exact mark to take each bend and flat, while the engineer-- looking out the right side of the train-- anticipated possible obstacles, and let his fireman know how the levels needed to be adjusted.
