In the past, the phrase 'make hay while the sun shines' had a very literal meaning. The hay was cut with scythes and sickles, and then forked high onto carts to be taken to the barn. With all this work to do, and few long intervals between rains to do it in, farmers had to work from dawn until dusk on the days when drying conditions were good. (Lauretta Jollimore)
