In the past, the phrase 'make hay while the sun shines' had a very
literal meaning. The hay was cut with scythes and sickles, and
then forked high onto carts to be taken to the barn. With all this
work to do, and few long intervals between rains to do it in, farmers
had to work from dawn until dusk on the days when drying conditions were
good.
