On July 11, 1985, a pool was opened at the Rec Center, the result of a generous $50 000 donation by Hulda Smith in memory of her brother Edward Van Koughnet. The pool was opened and dedicated by the Governor General of Canada, Jeanne Sauve. A crowd of 200 people were at the pool for the official opening, and no one fell in. (Gerald McCarville)
