The first steam engines on the Island operated by energy created by the expansion of steam. Each engine contained a furnace which usually ran by coal. The heat generated by the fuel would change the water in a large boiler into steam. The expanding steam would build up enough pressure to move the pistons, allowing the engine to move forward.
