As soon as the ice is thick enough to walk on, many smelt fishermen are setting up their shacks. These shacks protect the fishermen from the elements while they try to catch smelts, a small silvery fish with a white flesh. Many shacks today have the comfort of a stove to provide heat and to warm up the coffee.
