Many residents were shocked and upset when the rink was consumed by fire on December 1, 1977. While successful attempts were made at removing machinery and anything else that was not tied down, the building could not be saved. Not to be beaten, appeals were begun in order to rebuild the rink. The outpouring of support was phenomenal, with donations being received from as far away as Germany and Switzerland. Many long hours were spent designing the ins and outs of the building this time, with an emphasis on fire protection. Finally, the footings for the new building were started on May 16, 1978. Many people donated time, talents, and materials for the project. The opening skate in the building was held February 10, 1979 to the delight of many.
