After the Federal Government took responsibility for the operation of the railway in 1873, Thomas Swinyard surveyed the state of the PEI railway. This was quite a job since there was a railway station every two and one half miles! One of the items picked up as the train stopped at each station were the local dairy products. Possibly the frustration of passengers at this constant stopping and starting led to the expression 'milk run,' used to designate a slow, constantly interrupted route.
