'Big Jim' Pendergast (third from left) has become a legend in the local Kensington sports scene. After graduation from Prince of Wales College, James Pendergast briefly taught school for a few years on the Island, but decided to move to Boston to work on the Boston Elevated Railway. Lured by the promise of riches, he later travelled with his brother to the goldrush in the Klondike. He mined for a year and then joined the fire department in Dawson City, where he served for several years. (Mary Crane)
