Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote poetry and prose from the age of nine. The earliest surviving journals date back to 1889, when the blossoming author was fourteen, the age at which this picture was taken. Many years spent listening to family storytellers, studying Bible verse, learning old Scottish hymns, and writing in her journal proved to be valuable training for her.
