Maud clipped a photograph of this young woman, Evelyn Nesbitt, from an American magazine. The author pasted the photo to the wall near her writing desk and used her as a model for Anne of Green Gables in 1906. Anne of Green Gables was Montgomery’s first, best-loved, and best-known novel. After being rejected by five different companies, the novel was published in 1908, by the L. C. Page Co. of Boston.
