A map of Margate, which was the commercial center in the area prior to
the arrival of the railway in the 1870s. Closer to the water than
Kensington, it boasted large mercantile stores, a shipyard, and many tradesmen.
However, when the decision was made to put the rails through Kensington,
almost all of its business migrated three miles west.
