Annual Sewer Maintenance Program

The Town of Kensington wishes to inform residents and businesses that maintenance will be undertaken in various areas of the Town to remove settled and accumulating debris and material from the sanitary sewer main line system. This maintenance will commence on Monday, October 19, 2015 and will last for approximately 10 days.

The areas affected by the 2015 maintenance program are as follows:

  • Sunset Drive
  • Sunset Crescent
  • MacLean Avenue
  • Hillside Drive
  • Centennial Drive
  • Walker Drive
  • Pleasant Street
  • School Street
  • Imperial Street

Please be advised that during this process the contractor will be setting up at each manhole in the roadway and releasing pressurized water through the sanitary sewer main pipe to remove any build-up of materials. A bubbling and/or vacuum effect may be noticed in your drains and toilets due to this maintenance flushing. It is recommended to keep all toilet seats closed and cover any floor drains.

Internal plumbing typically consists of traps which hold a volume of water to prevent sewer gasses from migrating into a home. During the flushing process, this water could be drawn out of the traps by negative pressure created in the sanitary sewer main. For that reason, it is important to refill all plumbing traps by running the water in your sinks and floor drains after the maintenance work is complete.

Residents are reminded that they are required to have a backwater valve on their sewer lateral. Backwater valves are required to keep sewer from backing up into a home through plumbing fixtures, due to blockages in the main sewer lines. It also provides protection from sewer flushing as part of the Town’s maintenance program.

Please be patient during this preventative maintenance process and understand that it is necessary to eliminate the potential for sanitary sewer main surcharging which could result in damage to property.
