The Cornwall/Kensington Cougars will host a six-team tournament that begins on Friday evening, continues throughout the day on Saturday and will conclude with the playoffs on Sunday.
All 12 games, including three on Friday, six on Saturday and three on Sunday, will be played on the Rink and Legion Fields, which are both located behind Community Gardens.
Summerside, West Prince, Sherwood, Charlottetown and Cardigan will also participate in the tournament. All six teams play in the seven-team P.E.I. Peewee AAA Baseball League, which also includes Stratford.
Each team will play three round-robin games, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals on Sunday at 11 a.m. The semifinals will feature the first-place team taking on the fourth-place squad, and the second- and third-place teams clashing.
The winners will then meet in the winner-take-all final at 2 p.m., or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the last semifinal game.
This is the first year the Cornwall and Kensington associations have merged at the AAA level, and the Cougars are off to a 2-1 (won-lost) start in league play, including an 18-8 win over West Prince, a 5-0 victory against Summerside and a 5-4 extra-inning loss to Charlottetown.
The Cougars’ first tournament game will be under the lights on Friday against Sherwood at 8:30 p.m. The Cougars close out the round robin with games on Saturday against Cardigan at 12:30 p.m., and Charlottetown at 3 p.m.
The 12-member Cougars’ roster is comprised of Max Benton, A.J. Cahill, Dylan Cameron, Bailey Clark, Nicolas Havenga, Chandler LaPorte, Garett MacDougall, Nathan Mahar, Logan Saulnier, Evan Stapleton, Noah Stewart and Nicholas Trainor.
Andrew Cameron, Dave Benton and Mike Saulnier coach the Cougars.
The Cougars will also be operating a canteen as a fundraiser, and there will be barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers, drinks, potato chips and different treats available. The Cougars will also be selling tickets on a draw for a new bat.
